Second International Pilgrimage of Tradition to Rome -- "Rome Will Observe Closely"

(Rome) The Coetus Internationalis Summorum Pontificum (CISP) is recalling the Second International Pilgrimage of Tradition to Rome ad Petri Sedem and is asking for a large participation. The International Pilgrimage is an opportunity to express the vitality of tradition and an attachment to the old Mass. It is the first pilgrimage to Rome of this kind under the new pontificate. Great attention by the Curia and the press is expected: "The pilgrimage will be carefully observed in Rome" is the word in the Vatican because the change of popes has set some changes in motion.

The CISP is the organizer of the pilgrimage, which from the 24th to the 27th of October 2013, leads the pilgrimage of Catholic tradition to St. Peter's Tomb in Rome. Climax and conclusion of the pilgrimage, as in the previous year, will be a solemn Pontifical Mass in St. Peter's Basilica in the Extraordinary Form [Immemorial Mass] of the Roman Rite. The program of the pilgrimage about the first pilgrimage in 2012 on the Una Cum Papa Nostro site can be read.

The CISP wanted to initiate the pilgrimages to offer an expression of gratitude to Pope Benedict XVI. for the Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum granted in 2007. They also want to give the classical form of the Roman Rite more public attention and bring it back into St. Peter's Basilica, the most famous church of Christendom.

The first pilgrimage took place on the 1-3rd of November 2012 under the motto Una Cum Papa Nostro. They also concluded with a Pontifical Mass in St. Peter's Basilica in the Old Rite, which was publicly celebrated by the Spanish Cardinal Antonio Cañizares Llovera, Prefect of the Congregation of Rites. It was the first time since the reform of the liturgy, that the traditional rite was celebrated publicly with such a large crowd in St. Peter's faithful. Previously, only Cardinal Walter Brandmüller had celebrated during the meeting at one of the two main altars of the papal basilica in the traditional rite in 2011.

It has not been announced who will celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in the Old Rite in St. Peter's Basilica in 2013. On other days, Bishop Athanasius Schneider, Auxiliary Bishop of Astana and Bishop Rifan of the Apostolic Administration of St. John Vianney will celebrate the Mass of Saint Pius V.

Cardinal Cañizares Celebrates Mass in St. Peter's in Immemorial Rite of All Ages

In St. Peter's Basilica there will be a Mass in the Old Rite for a second time since its reintroduction to the main altar, and the celebrant is the Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship, Cardinal Canizares Llovera.

Vatican City (kath.net/KNA) As planned the Old Mass will be celebrated on the main altar for the second time since the freeing up of the Mass by Pope Benedict XVI.  The celebrant of the Pontifical High Mass will be the prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship, Cardinal Canizares Llovera on November 3rd.  It would be the first time since the publication of the Papal permission "Summorum Pontificum" in July of 2007 that a Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship has celebrated Mass in the Old Rite.

In May of 2011 the Curial Cardinal Walter Brandmüller had celebrated High Mass on the main altar of St. Peter's Basilica in the Extraordinary Rite.   Since then a Pontifical Mass at the cathedral altar with Cardinal Llovera as celebrant was announced.   For unknown reasons Cardinal Brandmüller was replaced by the Spaniard.  The Old Rite has been regularly celebrated in a side chapel for a long time.

The Mass with Cardinal Llovera is taking place in association of a Pilgrimage associated with those attached to the Old Rite.  The co-organizer is the Italian branch of the society "Una Voce".  It is an association of Catholic laity, who are attached to the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite and have committed themselves to the preservation of the Gregorian Choral.

With the allowance "Summorum Pontificum" Benedict XVI had freed the Tridentine Mass on September 2007.   The latin language service in the Old Rite will be designated, as it was prescribe after the Council of Trent (1545-1563) in the Catholic Church for the whole world.  These Mass books were gradually replaced at first after the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) by a new Liturgy,  which was to be celebrated in the respective national languages,  Latin was still allowed, however. [Actually, it was expected]

Does One Have to Obey the Disobedient Bishops?

"On the practical level it is often the case that the appeal of Papal instructions are not used by the pastor locally."

Should You Obey the Pope More than the Bishops?
(kreuz.net) "How should pastors acquit themselves, when -- as it is mostly -- universal Church and particular-legal regulations contradict one another?"

Fr. Hendrick Jolie (46) asked this question in an interview for the most recent edition of the Catholic monthly 'Kirchliche Umschau'.

Father Jolie is a pastor in the Diocese of Mainz.

The clergyman is remainded then, that is at least in theory the particular law is subordinate to the universal: "On the practical level it is often the case that the appeal of Papal instructions are seldom used by the Pastor locally."

And what did the Cardinal say?

An example of this for Father Jolie is the incorrect translation of the words of consecration in the Novus Ordo Eucharistic Celebration.

The corrections that were ordered by the Pope four years ago have been thoroughly ignored by the old Liberal Bishops.

For this reason, the German 'Network of Catholic Priests' -- in whose executive committee Father Jolie sits -- had written to the Roman Congregation for Divine Worship.

They asked the Prefect of the Congregation, Antonio Cardinal Cañizares Llovera, to answer the question, "how we should conduct ourselves in this inner conflict".

Tactical Chess Move

'Kirchliche Umschau'  suggests that Bishop Gerhard Ludwig Müller of Regensburg recently pled for an implementation of the Papal wish.

Father Jolie held the push of the Bishop for a compromise, which the German Bishops and the Pope would consider a loss of face:

"Without wanting to step on Bishop Müller, the question is in any case allowed, why is it that it's been four years since this proposal has come to the table."

And:  "Why then these wordy explanations, when in any case, the new edition of the German Missal has already been tendered by Rome?"

For Father Jolie this progress is not understandable:  "There the 26 Diocesan Shepherds to complete a newly revised Missal  -- in which the they have a hearing where  "for the many" [as the Pope asked] is not, rather it remains "for all" still --  and finally one of these Bishops publishes an explanation in which he pleads for another translation of the words of consecration."

Fr. Jolie comments: "Here it appears -- if I may put it politely -- that there is not only a communications problem within the German Bishops Conference."
